NYC Shopping Excursion
By Kelly P. Bristol, Brandwise
Greetings to our new MSA partners! I’m so pleased to have been invited by the MSA to write this blog!
I recently joined Brandwise and am working with the Association and its volunteers on your MSA Marketplace.
I might qualify as a “museum nerd” – is there a check list for this? I’d love that, as I like checking boxes and reaching goals.
I’ve spent a lifetime going to museums and shopping museum stores and consider visiting a museum in any new city or town that I visit an absolute “must.” My visits have typically included a stop in the museum café for lunch or a light bite with a glass of wine, as well as an essential stop in the museum store. I’ve been working in the gift industry for more than 20 years, and I love seeing brands I know in these stores. My friends may have grown weary of my exclamations of “I know this brand, they’re a client!”
I live in NYC, and here many museums and their stores are open – with new rules in place around capacity, social distancing and wearing masks, of course! Since September, I have enjoyed visiting a number of museums with one of my girlfriends – another museum nerd!
I’d like to offer a few concrete examples of the kinds of products available on MSA Marketplace – along with the terrific variety and ease of using the site, for buyers and vendors. These few examples that follow are just the smallest sampling of the world of merchandise being offered through this new and dynamic partnership.
I recently had the pleasure of shopping in two institutional member stores.
The Museum of Arts and Design
This Museum is located in busy Columbus Circle, basically across the street from Central Park and lots of other tourist destinations. I was greeted by Rita who informed me of the sale that was on at the time. One of the first things I noticed upon entering was a wall of small items near the cash register. I was excited to find these cool clips from Kikkerland. I love the color and the modern design. They’re definite binder clips at the next level – less bulky, and more attractive. I’ve already put them to good use.
Buyers with a Marketplace Passport already can shop for this on the MSA Marketplace here!
Other items I purchased included a Valentine’s Day card, a small phone accessory, and a notebook. Anyone who knows me is aware of my obsession with notebooks!
New-York Historical Society Museum and Library
Upon entering, I had my temperature checked, and then was admitted. The store has a cool blue neon sign reading “NY History Store” at the entrance. I spent a lot of time in here, as there were so many great products that I had not seen anywhere else!
The Historical Society is the home of a beautiful permanent exhibition – the Gallery of Tiffany Lamps. The store features products celebrating Tiffany from many brands including David Howell, Modgy and RainCaper, all merchandised together at one end of the store.
David Howell has a number of great products from the line on the MSA Marketplace.
Buyers can find these Clematis earrings here.
Modgy is such a cool line.
Buyers: Shop for the Magnolia Landscape Luminaries here!
Buyers: Find a similar RainCaper cape in the MSA Marketplace here.
I also loved seeing products recognizing important historical figures. There was a whole display of Kamibashi string doll key chains, including this fantastic Frederick Douglass keychain, which includes the quote “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”
Buyers: Take a closer look at the Frederick Douglass keychain on the MSA Marketplace here.
And this 500-piece puzzle of a portrait of Harriet Tubman by Pomegranate which buyers can order on the MSA Marketplace here.
I was delighted that all of these great products can be found on the MSA Marketplace! I hope that if you are a buyer, you already have your Passport to buy, as there are some 70,000 products currently available with more being added every day! If you are a vendor, we continue to see orders on the Marketplace. Many vendors are receiving orders from institutional members they’d not worked with before. The MSA Marketplace offers a great opportunity for your brand to be discovered and to generate new business. We want to be sure that all of MSA’s varied Members are taking advantage of this new platform. Buying has become a very different process these days – and we think that MSA Marketplace, powered by Brandwise, is the best new tool to help ALL Members craft their future success!!
